  1. CRUNCHY CREATURES
  2.  
  3. YOU'LL NEED:
  4. Toothpicks     
  5. Carrot and zucchini, cut into chunks
  6. Radishes
  7. Sliced almonds
  8. Cream cheese or peanut butter
  9. Round toasted oat cereal
  10. Raisins
  11. Chow mein noodles
  12. Pickles
  13.  
  14. STEP 1
  15. First try making an elephant. With adult help, poke holes through the carrots with toothpicks. stick toothpicks into the holes.

  17. STEP 2
  18. For the legs, push the toothpicks with the carrots attached into one side of the zucchini. Or use a pickle slice intead of the zucchini.

  20. STEP 3
  21. For the head, stick a toothpick into the green part of a zucchini slice. Attach the head to the body.

  23. STEP 4
  24. For the elephant's trunk, push a toothpick into the end of a pickle. Attach the pickle to the head.

  27. FOR GROWN-UPS:
  28. Try setting out a variety of materials and let your children create their own creatures. Give the creatures funny names. Then ask your kids questions like, "What color is Casper Caterpillar?" How many radishes did we use to make Casper?" "What did we use for William Woodpecker├òs nose?" "What is Eleanor Elephant├òs trunk made of?" When your children are done playing with their creatures, they can nibble on them for a healthy snack.

  31. A COOL IDEA:
  32. Are the kids "bugging you" for another idea? Here's one:

  34. Stick 8 chow mein noodles into a cherry tomato. Stick on raisin eyes with cream cheese or butter.  Pat the vegetables dry with a paper towel to help the cream cheese or peanut butter "glue" stick to the vegetables.
